HGI or GGI? They are serviced very differently.
Hydromechanical Grease Interceptor (HGI)
Formerly called a grease trap. Small, installed indoors, typically under or near the three-compartment sink. Generally rated 20 to 75 gallons per minute. In the City of San Diego, roughly 4,500 permitted facilities use an HGI.
Service: More frequent, faster visits. Manual cleanout, baffle inspection, and flow-restrictor check.
Gravity Grease Interceptor (GGI)
Larger concrete or plastic composite tank installed underground outside the building. Typical of high-volume and newer establishments, more than 1,400 permitted facilities in the City of San Diego. Concrete units should be accessible by three manhole covers, and all units require a sample box.
Service: Vacuum truck pump-out, full evacuation, wall and baffle inspection, sample box check.
